NEW ALBANY, Indiana (WDRB) -- It's a long way from a war zone to opening a new business in downtown New Albany. Laura Buckingham has come a long way. She has just opened Bread and Breakfast at the corner of Main and Bank Streets. "It's pretty scary, it's around the clock work," says Buckingham.

She is a former member of the Marine Corps and served two tours of duty in Iraq before coming back home and settling in New Albany. She says she started baking bread for her family and then friends started asking for it. So she began selling her homemade bread at Farmer's Markets around Southern Indiana and along highways. After much encouragement from friends she decided to open a retail store. She says she's had a lot of help getting her bakery up and running. One of her volunteer workers is her stepfather, Brutus Ward.

"I grew up in the doughnut business and when I went into the Navy my first hitch was as a cook," says Ward. Laura works with local farmers and other area vendors to serve the freshest ingredients. She says she is happy to be the newest addition to a revived downtown New Albany. "When I moved out of here New Albany was a ghost town, and when I moved back what a difference, I am blessed to be part of it," she says.

Now Laura is trying to raise additional funds through Kickstarter.com to make further improvements to her building. A young entrepreneur trying to make a go of it.
