The Mammoth Lakes area is in east-central California, southeast of Yosemite National Park, and includes the Mammoth Ski Area, widely considered one of the best ski resort areas in the United States, and the adjacent town of Mammoth Lakes. This general area also includes Crowley Lake, Rock Creek Canyon, Devils Postpile National Monument, June Lake, June Mountain Ski Area, Bodie State Historic Park, Mono Lake, and the Ansel Adams and John Muir Wilderness Areas.

In the summer, the Mammoth Lakes area offers hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, climbing, fishing, boating, kayaking, golfing, tennis, swimming, hot air ballooning, off-road vehicle use, fall foliage viewing, and resort-town activities like art galleries, movies, museums, shopping, live music, and fine dining.
