Description
Invite up to three friends to join you for a privately guided geology tour of Point Reyes National Seashore with geologist John Karachewski and a special picnic lunch from our friends at The Palace Market in Point Reyes Station.
Whether you are a budding or seasoned geologist, the park is an ideal destination for your next geological field trip and the story of Point Reyes is truly a study in motion – with slow, continental transformations and sudden, violent jolts that shake the Earth. Learn why the rocks of this craggy coast match those of the Tehachapi Mountains more than 310 miles to the south and how the discovery of plate tectonics helped geologists piece together the puzzle of Point Reyes.
John will customize your trip based on your knowledge and interests, while taking you to some of his favorite locations throughout the park. He will help you discover clues that tell the story of how this peninsula got here and explain other dynamic processes that have shaped Point Reyes. Your group will visit a number of locations including: the Bear Valley Visitor Center and Earthquake Trail that sit closest to the San Andreas Fault zone, the Point Reyes Lighthouse to see the Point Reyes Conglomerate, and Drakes Beach to view the sandstone cliffs, so reminiscent of the white cliffs of Dover in Ireland.
John has conducted geology and environmental projects throughout the western United States from Colorado to Alaska and Midway Island. He received his Master’s degree from Western Washington University and his doctorate from the Colorado School of Mines. He works for California EPA in Berkeley. In his spare time he enjoys taking photographs and teaching for Point Reyes National Seashore Association’s Field Institute.
Point Reyes Books will also provide a copy of Geology of the San Francisco Bay Region, by Doris Sloan and photography by John Karachewski for each participant to help you get better acquainted with our rich geologic history in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Start or end your day with a picnic lunch (includes sandwich, salad, chips, and a drink for each guest) from our local grocer The Palace Market. This fine market has roots in the community since the 1800s, providing farm fresh and artesian goods from the surrounding communities. Supplement your lunch with wines or other delectables from their robust selections of wines, cheeses and more.
A perfect outing or gift for the geology buffs in your life. Rock your world and bid today!
