Description

Point Reyes National Seashore Association is happy to partner with Dr. Brian Halstead and Green Mountain Digital for a night adventure at Point Reyes National Seashore for up to ten guests.

Gather up to 9 friends (kids encouraged) for an evening exploration of the world of bats at Point Reyes National Seashore. Your guests will get a chance to discover these nocturnal creatures with USGS wildlife biologist Dr. Brian Halstead, who will share his knowledge about our mammalian insect eaters and let you join in the research efforts to learn more. Dr. Halstead will discuss the natural history of bats, where they live, when they migrate, what they eat, and their conservation status. Your group will also see a demonstration of research equipment for capturing and studying bats (e.g. harp traps, mists nets), and possibly a live bat.

As it begins to get dark, Brian will set up special night vision equipment and an ultrasonic bat detector that makes it possible to hear bat vocalizations that normally fall outside the range of human hearing.  As the bats begin to vocalize, participants will have a chance to glimpse them as they fly in the twilight. The best times for this event are October 2014, or April or September 2015, when it is possible to catch night emergence and have a chance to see bats up close.

The auction winner will also receive 10 Green Mountain Digital Audubon apps for iPhone, iPad, iTouch, Android or Kindle to complement your outdoor learning adventures. Apps include: Audubon Birds, Audubon Mammals, Audubon Trees, Audubon Wildflowers, Audubon Mushrooms, Audubon Insects & Spider, Audubon Reptiles & Amphibians, Audubon Butterflies, Audubon Fishes & Audubon Tropical Fishes.
