Description
Home-made music video of vocal concert by Gaayatri Kaudinya, the finale of Avartan Music Festival at UCLA in 2013. Students from several universities across US, including UC Berkeley, Stanford, NYU, and others perform at the festival each year. As a founder of Avartan Music Festival, Gaayatri stated its mission as, " The goal of the event is to showcase the fact that there are so many Indian-American youth who spend their lives preserving, practicing, and perfecting Indian classical music while still being members of a 21st century society. Though the music finds its roots in our homeland many miles away with many centuries of tradition, the music remains intact with the new generation of musicians that are capable of taking this music further than it has ever gone before. The standards of the music remain extremely high, and we challenge ourselves to be the best musicians, and the best people we can be. We pledge to preserve the music of our ancestors recognizing its value, power, and importance in today's society, our own lives, and for the world's community. This music is our way of bringing inner peace to everyone who is searching for it in this world." Gaayatri started her musical training, at the age of 4, with Maestro Ali Akbar Khan, who was first introduced to the West by the famous violinist and conductor, Yehudi Menuhin. She performed both in US and India, since she was 8 years old. She recently graduated from UCLA with composition and performing emphasis in ethnomusicology. She performed as part of Bulgarian Music Ensemble in Mexico City. She also composed and conducted music for a broadway-type musical play, with a Korean cultural theme, at the prestigious Royce Hall at UCLA. Gaayatri is also credited for her vocal music contribution to two recently released Hollywood films, Million Dollar Arm by Disney, and The Hundred-Foot Journey, produced by Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey. Accompanying Gaayatri are, on violin Shiva Ramamurthi of UCLA and on tabla Ram Kaundinya, a sophomore high school student at Marin Academy, San Rafael, California. The concert is approximately 30 minutes in duration.
