Description

A Jewish feminist learning experience!

Enter the world of Hasidic Williamsburg, and immerse yourself in its history, culture and traditions. Join a walking tour unlike any other, led by Frieda Vizel, a New York City licensed tour guide and student on Hasidism. Frieda grew up in the Hasidic community and studied Hasidism in graduate school. With the sensitivity of an insider and the knowledge of a scholar she takes you through its streets and tells its unusual history, teaching with empathy, insight and nuance.

Groups are led through the neighborhood of shops, eateries, synagogues, schools and historical sites. They learn about the faith and value system of contemporary Hasidism, the history of Jewish Williamsburg, and the origin of Hasidism and its major sects, including Satmar. Groups learn about traditions of Hasidic marriage and family, the cultures of Hasidic women, men and children, dress, language and education. These topics are explored with lively conversations, but with emphasis on understanding and learning. Questions are always encouraged; we are eager to share. We want to hear your ideas, and we want to leave you with new thoughts and new ways of thinking about Hasidic culture.

Each tour group also samples delicious Hasidic food; it wouldn't be a real visit otherwise!

Tours last 90 minutes.
