Williams voluntarily attacked and destroyed a group of pillboxes that were key Japanese strong points.  He attcked with his flame-thrower, moving alone behind an atop the pill-boxes where he was exposed to enemy fire, grenades and bayonet attacks.  His actions saved the lives of many Marines.
