His fellow POWS recommended him for the MOH because of the way he lived buy the Military Code of Conduct and because of the things they learned from his North Vietnamese captors about how Sijan evaded capture. A life size sculpture of Sijan was created by Sculptor Mark Austin Byrd and Jenelle Armstrong Byrd and installed in tube “Mall of Heroes” at the Adademy.
