U Boats "9th Flotilla, Der lachende, Schsertifisch or the laughing Swordfish" Sub WWII Citation and Report 30, July 1943

Lt. Schenck flew anti-submarine patrols out of out three main locations during World War II.  Key West, Florida, Recife Brazil and the Azores.  He shared many stories with his son growing up as young member of the U.S. Navy Sea Cadet program in Dallas, TX.  One story was of him flying escort for President Roosevelt on his way to the Malta Conference. Another was him landing at an airfield with the lights turned off during a hurricane.  The Petty Officer thought that no one would be flying in that weather.  The aircraft fuel was so low that the dip stick could not record any left.  The Petty Officer and Dad had a "discussion" of the wisdom of his actions.  The main story took place out of Recife, Brazil on 30 July 1943 where his Dad's U.S. Navy squadron was stationed.
