"My mother was an excellent cook, but baking was not in her repertoire. As a teenager, determined to outshine her cooking skills, I learned to make challah bread which is now a family holiday favorite. Apple sauce was something we canned for the winter. Apple butter came later, when I realized you could keep cooking it, add spices and brown sugar."
