Dummer spent his entire life in Massachusetts, born in Rowley, died in Beverly. In 1906 whenhe was 28 years old, he began to study with John Carlson. later he studied with Barge Harrison, Eric Pape, and George L. Noise. he also studied at the Art Students' League, New York. He later was a staff artist at the Boston Post and The Youth's Companion.
