Why Dental Sealants are Important?


 




Dental Sealants are a preventative method. A dental sealant is a plastic material that is applied to the chewing surfaces of back molars. The sealant material flows into the pits and grooves of teeth acting as a barrier to protect enamel by sealing out plaque and food. When we eat or drink anything that contains sugar, bacteria turns the sugar into acids that attack tooth enamel. Over time this creates decay on the chewing surfaces of teeth. The pits and grooves that trap these bacteria are hard to keep clean because tooth bristles cannot reach into them. This is how a cavity can begin.
