Description

In 1990, Dutch artist Theo Jansen began what he is known for today: building large mechanisms out of hollow plastic pipes that he calls a new form of life. His creations are known as Strandbeest and have been featured at Art Basel.

“Not pollen or seeds but plastic yellow tubes are used as the basic material of this new nature. I make skeletons that are able to walk on the wind, so they don’t have to eat.”

His animated works are a fusion of art and engineering. He strives to equip his creations with their own artificial intelligence so they can avoid obstacles by changing course when one is detected, such as the sea itself. To see Strandbeests in action, visit www.strandbeest.com.

Assemble your own mini Strandbeest and marvel at Jansen's ingenuity and creativity.  Box is signed by the artist! Donor Adriana Atwill (RE parent) is Theo Jansen's niece.
