Item Number: 251
Time Left: CLOSED
Description
This “day-in-the-life” package will include a half day experience on the campus of Texas Biomed where three students will have the opportunity to visit with a scientist from both the Genetics and Virology & Immunology Departments over lunch. You will tour the room where researchers “suit-up” before entering the bio-safety level 4 containment laboratory where they work with viruses for which there are no vaccines or cures. You will the tour the genetics sequencing lab and see one of the largest computers centers dedicated to analysis of genomics. Finally you will get an up-close tour of the Southwest National Primate Research Center and learn how important these primates are in curing both animal and human diseases – all seen through the eyes of the center’s dedicated caregivers who are responsible for the animal’s well-being.
One parent of each of these students is invited to join the tour, as well as one teacher.
Texas Biomedical Research Institute is an independent research center that is a pacesetter in the race to find new preventions, treatments and cures for life's most serious diseases. Texas Biomed researchers specialize in cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, HIV, Parkinson’s disease, macular degeneration, malaria and a host of other infectious diseases. Recent accomplishments include collaborating in the efforts to cure Hepatitis C and discovery of a compound that curtails the progression of Ebola once it is contracted, which was featured as a cover story in the most prestigious journal Science earlier this year.
