Description

HISTORIC HEIDELBERG GERMANY

A beautiful city on the Neckar River, Heidelberg is rich with history, tradition and architecture. Museums in the city exhibit artifacts from before the Bronze and Iron ages and establish the city as a transportation and political center during the Roman era.

The famous Heidelberg Castle blends a series of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles, along with graphic evidence of French attempts to destroy it in 1689 and 1693. Below this vast edifice, the rustic Old Bridge with its Baroque-helmeted gate towers spans the Neckar, which flows through a landscape that changes dramatically with times and seasons. Many famous poets, musicians and painters have come to contemplate the city¿s natural beauty. Great advances in education and research have emanated from its university. The Holy Ghost church, which dominates the skyline, exemplifies a history of religious activity.

In this watercolor, Marsha Cheney expresses the changing light and seasons of the year as they add charm to the Heidelberg Castle and Old Bridge.

Marsha is a native of Jackson Hole, Wyoming.  During 14 years while living in Germany, she achieved the highest level, the ¿Gold Certificate,¿ at the Wiesbaden Herzfeld School of Art.  She also studied under American watercolorist, Evangeline Getze, with City Colleges of Chicago in Heidelberg, Germany.

Inspired by the Impressionists of Europe, Marsha¿s paintings reflect the charm of historic European architecture nestled in lush natural beauty; the magic of old German Christmas traditions, and a melding of the old and the new in modern Germany.

Her original watercolors and prints are popular in Europe and are found in many private collections in the USA.  Marsha¿s pen and ink sketch of the Heidelberg Castle and Old Bridge was used by the United Services Organization, Rhein-Neckar, Germany.  They included her work on special invitations, fliers and programs for their benefit performance of the ¿Student Prince,¿ a popular play performed annually in Heidelberg.
