Shidoshi Sean Schenker Sean has been training and teaching students in the martial way for nearly 20 years. He holds the rank of "Yodan" 4th Degree Black Belt in Midori Yama Budokai Junari Karate, "Dan" 1st degree Black Belt in Oyama-Kyokushin Kai Karate & 1st degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. He is a chartered member of nationally affiliated Martial Arts USA (MAUSA) and Midori Yama Budokai (MYB), and he trained under the watchful eye of Grandmaster Hanshi Tommy Lunsford. Sean began his martial arts journey at age 5, and he received his first dan while training Oyama Karate, a form directly linked to Mas Oyama's Kyokushin-Kai. Sean trained, taught and competed under this umbrella working alongside many accomplished teachers including Sensei Frank Clark (of Fighting Black King's fame). Sean also began studying Tae Kwon Do during his years training Japanese karate, and he is a former Junior Olympic and NY State Champion. Sean continued his pursuit of the martial way while living in Athens, Georgia and he received his subsequent dan certificates there. Sean continues to train and attend martial arts clinics while devoting much of his time to teaching students in upstate NY where he lives.
Sensei Sean is a working and performing musician, and his background in the performance arena adds to his ability to relate to students of all ages. He is nurturing in his guidance of students, instilling trust through compassion and patience - integral pieces to the ultimate development of technique of a student. "Many teachers I have trained with over the years approach karate with the perspective out of fear of the teacher grows respect. I do not subscribe to this philosophy on any level. I believe firmly in teaching with a gentle heart - being a teacher that knows how to ask for the best of what is inside each and every student, but always done with grace, humility and a sincere desire to see every student reach their maximum potential. I believe the strongest bond between teacher and student comes out of an environment where safety, communication, guidance and tolerance are all paramount."
Learning to become empowered by the martial arts is a life-long process, and often the first impression one gets is the one that sticks with them most. Sensei Sean's main objective is to make that first impression a lasting, life-long one.
