Description

Chincoteague Island, Virginia

One week in a private vacation home during Pony Penning: 7/25/15 - 8/1/15

Chincoteague is best known as the home of the annual Chincoteague Pony Swim, made famous by Marguerite Henry’s book, Misty of Chincoteague. Chincoteague is also rated by assorted travel magazines as one of the USA’s “Best Small Beach Towns” or “Friendliest Beach Towns.” Chincoteague is the gateway to Assateague Island and Assateague National Seashore (recently rated one of America’s “Most Romantic Beaches”) and the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, which is where the famous ponies spend most of the year. Except … during Pony Penning! The ponies are rounded up for the annual pony swim from Assateague to Chincoteague. While the swim lasts only a few minutes, the festivities are week-long, including the beach roundup at sunrise, the swim itself, a parade through town, the auction of selected ponies, and the swim back to Assateague. THIS WEEK is the high season of high seasons in Chincoteague!

Island Heart is a private vacation home, not a rental. Situated on deep water on Lewis Creek on Main St, Island Heart is a two-story modernized waterman’s house with two bedrooms (one king BR overlooking the water; one queen BR) plus a queen sleeper-sofa in the living room, accommodating a maximum of six. Located ~1/2 mile from downtown – an easy walk – Island Heart has a boat dock, gazebo, friendly neighbors, and awesome sunsets. In addition to the Pony Penning festivities, Chincoteague is a great location for bird watching, beachcombing, fishing, kayaking, or simply relaxing. Beach access is only 5 min. away by car; 20 min. bike ride.

Chincoteague is ~150 miles south of Wilmington via DE 1/ US 113 (or US 13). Just barely across the MD/VA line, Chincoteague is Virginia’s only inhabited barrier island. $100 cleaning fee payable directly to owner.
