Snapped on the Street: A Community Archive of Photos and Memories from Downtown Tucson, 1937-1963
Edited by Stephen Farley, Regina Kelly, and the Ward VI Youth History Team.
Here it is at last: a visual treasure trove of a forgotten time - the heyday of Downtown Tucson, mid 20th century. Before the dawn of malls and super-stores, before the urban sprawl and exclusive reliance on the automobile, Downtown was the place to be - to buy a dining-room set or an engagement ring, to get a haircut, to gawk at Steinfeld's miraculously "mechanized" Christmas window displays, to hang at the Walgreen soda fountain with your girlfriends while flirting with the boys in the booth behind you. Downtown was the community's working center, shopping mecca and playground, all rolled into one.
