Following on the heels of his acclaimed debut Sacrifice Fly, Tim O’Mara’s Crooked Numbers is another outstanding mystery that brings to life the streets of Brooklyn and Manhattan, and further solidifies O’Mara’s place among the most talented new crime fiction writers working today.

About the Book

Before Raymond Donne’s former student Dougie Lee was fatally stabbed under the Williamsburg Bridge, he had everything going for him, thanks a scholarship to one of Manhattan’s most exclusive private schools. A story like that would normally get some serious attention from the police and press. But this murder appears gang-related.

With interest fading and the police ready to settle for the most obvious explanation, Dougie’s mom asks Ray to look into the case. As an ex-cop whose career was cut short by a tragic accident, Ray’s cop training kicks into high gear: asking tough questions, meeting with gang members, helping a beautiful reporter keep pressure on the police.

Ray doesn’t get far before one of Dougie’s prep school friends is killed and another ends up in the hospital. What kind of trouble could a couple of privileged kids from the Upper West Side get into that would end like that? And what does it have to do with Dougie’s death? None of it adds up, and Ray isn’t about to wait for the police to catch a break. He’s got to find out what happened to Dougie before another kid ends up hurt—or dead.

About Tim O'Mara

Tim O’Mara has been teaching math and special education in the New York City public schools since 1987. He has written several short stories and his second Raymond Donne mystery acquired by Minotaur Books/St. Martin’s Press, Crooked Numbers, will hit bookstores October 15, 2013. For the past twelve years, he has hosted and produced a bi-weekly reading series of poetry and prose in New York’s East Village.

He lives in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen with his wife, Kate, and their daughter, Eloise.

He was inspired to write Sacrifice Fly and create the character of Raymond Donne after making home visits as a schoolteacher in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. He also had many dealings with the Youth Officers of the NYPD when he served as a middle school dean. It occurred to him that someone with experience in both worlds would make a great protagonist. Sacrifice Fly is his first novel.
