About the Artist:
John Thompson works as a Painter, Illustrator, and Professor of Art at Syracuse University. He has been featured in Communication Arts magazine, Step-By-Step Graphics and Art Direction magazine.
The internationally known illustrator has won numerous gold and silver medals for his illustrations including the 2006 Hamilton King Award from the Society of Illustrators for the best illustration of the year. As a children’s book illustrator he has won several American Library Association Notable Book Awards. John is included in The Illustrator in America, 1860-2000 by Walt Reed.
A select list of his clients include Scholastic Books, Dial Books for Children, Harper/Collins Publishing, The Creative Company, Time magazine, Newsweek, The U.S. Air Force, NASA, the Adolph Coors Company, Busch Beer, Allendale Insurance, Mobil Mystery Theatre, Esquire, Sports Illustrated, and Playboy magazine.
Selected Group Shows include 200 Years of American Illustration, New York Historical Society, New York City, N.Y; Miami University’s 50th Anniversary of Outstanding Graduates; Reflections at the Aldrich Museum, Ridgefield, CT; Every Picture Tells A Story, Norman Rockwell Museum; the Syracuse University Florence Center 40th Anniversary Faculty Exhibition, The United States Consulate, Florence, Italy.

John has received two Fellowships from the State of New Jersey, including the designation of Distinguished Artist.
John is a Professor of Illustration at Syracuse University. He is the Coordinator of the Illustration Program as well as Program and Thesis Advisor for the Independent Study Degree Program, M.A./Illustration. In 1998-1999, John was Professor of Painting and Chair of the Studio Arts Program in Florence, Italy. He served as Chair of the Visual Communications Department from 2003-2005. For the past two years he has taken students to India as part of his Painting and Drawing India class. He lives with his family in Syracuse, NY.
