Description

"Jonah" by famed Japanese printmaker, Watanabe Sadao, is a Katazome or Japanese stencil on heavy handmade momigami paper. This piece of art is edition 47 of 50, printed in 1959 and framed on burlap background and ornate glass frame. The print itself measures 23" x 26.5" and frame 32" x 37".

Watanabe Sadao (1916-1996) was born and grew up in Tokyo. He worked in a dyers' shop at a young age and was inspired by the folk arts movement led by Keisuke Serizawa. A devout Christian, Sadao was famous for producing prints with biblical themes using the Katazome technique.
