Description
One bottle is from Carlisle's Pelkan Ranch -
Perhaps one of their most consistent fruit sources, those who have tasted previous vintages will know exactly what to expect – another outstanding Pelkan Ranch Syrah! Picked later than ever, on October 14th, the fruit was fully destemmed and cold-soaked for four days before inoculation with a yeast isolated from the Côte du Rhône. At five brix, the wine was pressed to all French Oak, 62% new, to finish fermentation in barrel. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting Note: Very dark ruby-purple. Aromas of blackberry and Satsuma plum with suggestions of Jujubes, tar, meat, and vanilla. A wonderful sniff! Full-bodied but not at all fat due to the mountain-grown tannins. Really blossoms texturally on day two, an indication of the good things to come. Drink this age-worthy wine from 2010 through 2020.
The other is from Carlisle's Papa's Block -
Picked quite late in the season (October 31st), Carlisle knew from the get-go that their Papa’s Block syrah was going to be something special. Forty percent whole cluster, an indigenous fermentation, and plenty of pumpovers and punchdowns ensured they captured everything these grapes had to offer. The downside? Only about 110 cases of this scrum-dilly-icious syrah were produced.
Tasting Note: Dark ruby-garnet. Heady aromas of blackberry and crème de cassis emerge from the glass but this time, mixed with a suggestion of talc and earth. Full-bodied and opulent. The ample tannins are nearly obscured by the abundant fruit. Drink now.
