Spectral Sun (16)
2015
Laser toner on mulberry paper
9.25 x 15.75 (these are the unframed dimensions of the work but it IS framed)
Marsha Cottrell’s unique (one of a kind) Aperture and Interior works are developed in multiple passes of the paper through a laser printer as shapes are incrementally moved on the screen. Her Spectral Sun series images are determined in part by the printer’s interpretation of a densely knit file of rotated lines. Cottrell is currently showing new, large and small-scale work at Eleven Rivington, in both the 11 Rivington and 195 Chrystie Street spaces (now through April 5).
Other solo exhibitions include Petra Rinck Galerie, Dusseldorf; Henry Urbach Architecture, NY; g-module, Paris; Derek Eller, NY; and Revolution Gallery, Detroit. Cottrell has received fellowships and grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, the New York Foundation for the Arts, and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation; in 2013, she received a Biennial Award from The Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation. Cottrell’s work is included in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art, NY; The National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; The Philadelphia Museum of Art, PA; and The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, CA.
