Often overshadowed by the giant pandas, red pandas are fascinating creatures in their own right. Scientists at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) in Front Royal, VA are working to preserve and understand red pandas. Their new breeding facility at SCBI is nestled in a patch of woods to give the animals privacy and also provide enrichment for both species, as they will be able to watch abundant native wildlife.
