Description
Artist ~ Debora Meltz
In the Shard Series of plates and bowls, the artist use the pieces of clay that are left over previous sculptures. These small, flat pieces already have a shape and texture, and the challenge is to put them together to form a new piece.
They are called "shards," because the individual pieces remind the artist of the fragments from an archeological dig - bits of a former time, place and object. The artist also like the fact that she is using every bit of the clay, virtually none goes to waste.
Many of the Shard Series pieces are functional and may be used for serving. That, too, has appeal ...the combining of scraps of something that is not functional to make something that now is functional. Each Shard piece contains the remnants of the artwork that went before it.
Born and raised in New York City, Debora Meltz received a BFA from The Cooper Union and holds a Master's Degree in printmaking and drawing from William Paterson University. Her prints, multi-medium works on paper, and photography have been exhibited nationally and in Canada in galleries and museums. Debora has also had several national solo exhibitions.
