A meteorite wiped out the dinosaurs. Will the smartphone kill serious news?

Newspaper publishing is facing an existential challenge.

The readers are still reading;  in fact, more people are reading newspapers’ content than ever before. But more and more, they’re doing it on LCD screens, which are getting smaller – and less effective for most advertisers – as tablets and smartphones supplant desktops and laptops as the devices of choice. That only exacerbates the dilemma of advertising revenue shrinking from print dollars to digital dimes (or pennies).

The result seems to be an era in which journalism that’s not obsessed with conspicuous consumption or narrow B-to-B niches just can’t pay for itself.

What will keep newspapers, and with them, public-interest journalism, from going the way of the dinosaurs? There’s a surprising answer to that question and the Forward is leading the way.

This salon will be hosted by Lisa Taubenblat & Jonathan Roberts at their lavish home in Cobble Hill.
