Description

The "Copper-Colored Mountain is Within My Heart" is from a new body of work from potter Mindy Moore. The copper coloured mountain is where Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) resides.

The platter is made using raku clay and fired outdoors to a very low temperature. Once the desired firing temperature is reached, the piece is pulled out of the kiln piping hot and immersed in combustible material. In this case the material used was shredded newspaper. After initially burning it sat in the remnants of the newspaper and smoked for 30 to 45 minutes. After much scrubbing with steel wool, the colours and textures emerge. The copper is applied after the firing process.

Mindy Moore has been a studio potter for 35 years. She first touched clay in high school and her experience on the potter's wheel at that time inspired her to study ceramics. She went on to study at Syracuse University College of Visual and Performing Arts under the tutelage of Henry Gernhardt and David MacDonald where she received a BFA in Ceramics. While there, she focused her ceramic art history studies on pottery of the Far East and was introduced to the Japanese concept of Wabi, which has greatly influenced her work from that point on.
