Time Lapse Dance brings the Arctic home to the JCC Manhattan with a program inspired by choreographer Jody Sperling’s incredible journey. In 2014, Sperling joined a 7-week polar science mission, as choreographer-in-residence aboard a US Coast Guard icebreaker. While the scientists collected data on the ice, she danced on the frozen sea. This was her research for a new stage production, Ice Cycle (Phase I), which will premiere at the JCC program.

Expressing the dynamism and fragility of the Arctic icescape, Ice Cycle, is a collaboration with Alaskan-born composer Matthew Burtner. Choreographer and composer share a passion for ice and aim to bring its many phases and transformations to life through movement and music. Sperling and her ensemble of five women dancers crystalize into icy kaleidoscopic patterns and melt into turbulent eddies. Innovative costuming, lighting and projections help the company suggest the ever-shifting topography of ice.

The Saturday evening program will be preceded by a free public discussion with climate scientists and educators about how what happens in the Arctic affects us all. The matinee performance is followed by a free participatory workshop for children. The Sunday evening performance will be followed by a talkback with the creators and climate scientists about using the arts to communicate climate science issues.

The program will also include a revival of Time Lapse Dance’s signature climate-themed work Turbulence, which visualizes patterns of air disturbance into kinetic patterns.
