Due to it's popularity, Elliott Arkin's current exhibition at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nice, France, was extended an extra three months (on view until February 2nd). The show, titled A Peaceable Kingdom after the American painting by Edward Hicks, displays small-scale sculptures of art history giants Louis Bourgeois, Andy Warhol, Van Gogh, O'Keeffe, and Picasso in a whimsical outdoor scene. Emblematic of his past as cartoonist-in-residence on Artnet.com, Arkin's work takes a satirical spin on art world events and history while tying together larger issues involving nature, the environment and socio-political structures. Here Seedbed's literal meaning is compounded by the art history reference to Vito Acconci's legendary performance in 1972 at Sonnabend Gallery. Arkin's transformation of the artists into active lawn gnomes relates the idea of artists as caretakers of space and the sowing of their ideas and actions that shape our world.
