Description

Each of these unique night-lights were made from a thin slab of stone, chosen for its translucency so light shining through it produces fantastic patterns when lit up. The four different stones are:

1. "Pudding Stone," with colorful pebble inclusions suggesting bits of raisins, currents, dates, and other ingredients that might be found in an English pudding.

2. A different kind of "Pudding Stone," with various white pebbles suggestive of bits of marshmallow.

3. "Charlevoix Stone," which is a fossilized Favosite coral. Similar to Petoskey stone (the state stone of Michigan), the individual organisms of Favosite coral were much smaller in diameter than the Hexagonaria percarinata that formed Petoskey stones.

4. Brazilian Agate, showing the banded, layered nature of the crystals formed in the interior of a large geode. Quartz is present  in voids in the agate, allowing light to be transmitted through these irregular layers and producing the beautiful, fiery pattern seen in this  specimen.

These stone slices were cut by Mel Glick, a retired clinical chemist and professor from the IU School of Medicine in Indianapolis. He now resides in Wakarusa, Indiana. [e-mail:
