Artist Statement:  Every time I paint a landscape or seascape, I make a personal connection to the land, water, and sky to translate their essence—without distracting detail—so that the painting not only holds the time and place, but also evokes a sense of being there. Expressing an atmospheric sense of place on a two-dimensional surface is almost magical when it happens and the painting comes to life. Referred to by one critic as "traditional art with a contemporary flair," my paintings are inspired by an enduring love of nature.

Artist Biography:  For almost 50 years, Marblehead resident Susan K. Burgess has painted conservation areas of New England and travel locations on site (en plein air), thus combining creativity and a keen eye with her love of nature and exploration. She earned a B.A. in Studio Art, 24 graduate credits in Art Education, and graduate certificates in both Management and Graphic Arts; has taught art to children in public schools and to senior citizens as part of an enrichment program in Cambridge; and has taken countless workshops with local and international artists. She is a juried Artist Member of both the Marblehead Arts Association and Cambridge Art Association.
