Artist Statement: John Orne Johnson Frost was born in Marblehead in 1852. At age 67, without any training as an artist, he set out to depict both history and memories of his hometown. Using board and house paint, his style is what is called naive. The Marblehead Historical Society has many of his paintings in their collection.
Artist Biography: I have been a member of the Marblehead Arts Association since 1988, and for two years before that a member of the Swampscott Arts Association. I have been a docent at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA, since 1992 and have exhibited frequently at the Marblehead Festival of Arts.
I graduated from a public high school that had a very strong art program, but did not paint seriously for a number of years; career and raising four children intervened. I started painting locally with Mary Field, a well-known watercolorist. I have done workshops in Monhegan, Maine, with Don Stone and in Vermont with Jean Dobie. I have taken courses at Montserrat College of Art, North Shore Community College, and Endicott College, as well as local workshops. I paint primarily with oils and watercolors, although this year I worked with acrylics and pastels.
Hosting Business: "Tribute to J.O.J. Frost" is on display at Bus Stop, 85 Washington St., Marblehead, MA.
