Description

Title & Artist:  "Hanging with the BIG FISH" – by Paula Cardarelli

Medium & Size:  Glass and porcelain mosaic on wood.  21 7/8" L x 8 5/8" H x 3/4" D.  For indoor display only.

Artist Statement:  One of the great things about art and being a life-long learner is the excitement one gets when given a project like a COD. Unlike a canvas, the COD was a way for me to stretch my artistic ability beyond what feels comfortable. Seeing my blank COD reminded me of a Children’s book called "Swimmy". The COD and the memories of this book inspired me to produce a mosaic piece with the use of blue glass fish and a few bright porcelain fish that were merely happy just to be hanging out with the group. I hope you enjoy this piece as much as I enjoyed making it!

Artist Biography:  Born in Massachusetts, I have always had an appreciation for New England landscapes and designs. Basically a self-taught artist, I earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a BSN in Nursing. Although I have a career in nursing, much of my free time is devoted to art.

As a child, I would diligently journal my days, and I would often add detailed sketches using pencil or charcoal. In my late teens I started to experiment with different mediums and fell in love with the vibrant colors and flexibility of oils. Excited by the idea that I could express myself and translate the beauty of what I see—even in a fleeting moment—into something more timeless, I began with oil on canvas in plein air.

I have been painting realistic landscapes since 1980. On occasion, I do like to explore other mediums and even pieces with multiple mediums. Like nursing, painting and art are a jouney centered in love and compassion, and I believe that is often transcribed into my work.
