Description
Title & Artist: "Beauty Nearing Extinction" – by Sandra Winter
Medium & Size: Metal, paper, and sequins on wood. 24" L x 9 1/8" H x 3/4" D. For indoor display only.
Artist Statement: I make collages and mixed media pieces because I have a compelling desire to communicate the great tragedy, beauty, and comedy I feel in the world. I want to convert these thoughts, impressions, feelings, and concerns into visual images I can share with others. My work falls into three general areas: social justice and environmental concerns, aging and death, and images of what I perceive the spiritual life to be. I also create for the sheer fun of using found and recycled materials in playful and unique ways.
"Beauty Nearing Extinction" is about my deep concern for the disappearance of this iconic fish. The background is an ocean chart, the iridescent scales are sequins, and the tail comes from a piece of Victorian tin ceiling I found between two buildings on Market Street in Lynn. I am left-handed and found it necessary to turn the fish around to work.
Artist Biography: I am primarily a self-taught artist who has taken a few courses here and there.
Hosting Business: "Beauty Nearing Extinction" is on display at Eos Designs Studio, 10B Atlantic Ave., Marblehead, MA.
