Description

Title & Artist:  "Dia de los Muertos" – by Kaitlyn Nohelty

Medium & Size:  Acrylic paint and paper on wood.  21 7/8" L x 8 5/8" H x 3/4" D.  For indoor display only.

Artist Statement:  The Mexican Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is truly a celebration of life. When children dance with caricatures of death, eat skull sugar molds, and learn to respect that life is brief, they learn there is a circle to life and to not fear death. They are then free to enjoy and appreciate every moment.

The Day of the Dead has always been a creative and joyous holiday for me. Through art, music, and ritual, this event honors our ancestors and celebrates the vitality and richness of today’s community. So when presented with the opportunity to create a cod, I thought, "what captures the essence of the Festival better than Dia de los Muertos?" I chose bright colors to match the traditional art and also to blend with the colors of the summer.

Artist Biography:  Kaitlyn Nohelty is an honors student in her sophomore year at Marblehead High School. She is engaged in many activities, including music, art, and track and field. She has been participating in the Marblehead Festival of Arts for years and was the youngest Festival photographer at 8 years old. She is excited to be able to contribute to the 50th Festival of Arts this year.

Hosting Business:  "Dia de los Muertos" is on display at Java Sun, 35 Atlantic Ave., Marblehead, MA.
