“All hands on deck!” yelled Captain William Montgomery as he organized his men and prepared for the worst…

During the cold winter of 1876, Captain William Montgomery and his crew were sailing the Butler, a schooner-rigged canal boat, upon the grand Lake Champlain.  Montgomery and his crew were approaching the Burlington coastline when they were trapped by a debilitating winter gale which broke their steering mechanism.  The bitterly frozen waters of Lake Champlain threatened the lives of captain and crew as they attempted to fix and correct the boat.  Their endeavor to jury-rig the tiller bar was unsuccessful and the schooner drifted aimlessly closer to the breakwater and was at the mercy of the rough and choppy current. As a last stand to save the vessel, Montgomery then dropped his anchor, which dug and scraped into the rocky lake bottom.  With all his might and the prayers of the crew, Captain Montgomery pulled back on the wheel and tried to steer his way to safety.  However, to steer he must cut anchor which could send them straight into the breakwater…

Does Captain Montgomery and his crew survive the treacherous waters, or do they escape the jagged ice-covered rocks of the breakwater?  Join us aboard the Northern Lights to continue the thrilling story!
