Description

1966 Special Mint Set

1966 marks the second of three years of production for the U.S. Mint's Special Mint Sets. Because neither regular Proof Sets nor Mint Sets were produced in 1966, these five coin sets are collected by both proof and mint set collectors. But, due to their low mintage- only 2,261,583 were produced- they can be hard to find. Each of the five coins in the set is minted from specially produced dies, which imparts a highly reflective though not proof surface to the coins. Many collectors find them even more appealing than proofs! For the second year, the Kennedy Half Dollar is the only coin in the set containing silver, and it is 40% of the precious metal.
