Mixed media wall relief
Virginia Mahoney holds an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan and a BA from the University of Florida. She was a Core Fellow at Penland School of Crafts in NC. She has recently exhibited her work in Boston at the State Transportation Gallery and previously at the Lancaster (PA) Museum of Art and the Bristol (RI) Museum, as well as the AAM. Virginia taught high school art in Avon for over 30 years.
“Grasp” is part of a series of mixed-media reliefs created by the artist in 2014-15, utilizing painted aluminum figures, ambiguous ceramic forms, fragments of past work and wire linear/structural elements. The figures' exposed maze-like skeletal/muscular anatomies suggest both vulnerability and strength. The arrangements allude to dilemmas that are encountered when attempting to sort and classify objects, ideas, or people.
