Description

2 magnum Terra d'Oro 2012 Barbera, 1.5 liter

Vineyard & Varietal Information

Long celebrated in the Piedmont region of Northern Italy for its role in Barbera d’Alba and Barbera d’Asti, Barbera has found a home in the rolling foothills of Amador County. By no means new to the state, Barbera is the sixth most planted red grape in California. However, it has only recently graced the stage of varietal bottlings. Amador Barbera produces elegant wine with layers of soft fruit, exotic spice, and voluptuous mouthfeel.

Winemaking Information

Terra d’Oro Barbera was fermented in stainless steel for a full two weeks, extracting maximum color and flavor. At Terra d’Oro, we believe that barrel aging is essential to making Barbera. For this vintage, French and Hungarian oak barrels were used in a truly international oak program. Aging in small oak barrels gently integrates toasty oak aromas and flavors with the rich, juicy fruit. This process takes time, 15 months in this case, but the seamless transition from fruit to oak is a worthy prize.

Tasting Notes

Terra d’Oro Barbera showcases the refreshing acidity of the grape with inviting aromas of sweet red fruit and fresh toasted bread. Enticing flavors of cherry cola and blueberries coat the palate, and polished tannins boast an elegant, round finish. A perfect complement to savory dishes, Terra d’Oro Barbera pairs particularly well with pork roast or orecchiette bolognese.

Special Instructions

Amador County, the epicenter of the Mother Lode, has witnessed its fair share of fortunes over the years. It was here during the Gold Rush that pioneers discovered treasures buried in the rich earth; it was also here that miners planted vineyards to quench their thirst. Little did they know that they’d be sowing the seeds of our eventual good fortune.

Today it is our privilege—and pleasure—to make world-class wines here in the Amador foothills. Terra d’Oro wines were first released in 1973 under the Montevina label, the first Amador County winery to produce wine since Prohibition ended. We quickly earned a reputation for crafting robust, full-flavored red wines, Zinfandel and Barbera in particular. Word spread, and a short time later, Amador’s historic wine industry was revived.

With 400 acres of magnificent acres of estate vines—including several historic, old-vine vineyards—Terra d’Oro Winery now produces uncommonly delicious Zinfandel, Barbera, Sangiovese, Syrah, Pinot Grigio and Moscato. We’re incredibly fortunate to be part of the long history established here more than 150 years ago, and hope that if you’re ever in the area, you’ll stop by for a visit.
