Within the privacy of the miniature world, Emily Boucher found a unique level of intimacy that absorbed and engrossed her attention:

 “It's a world of privacy... the smaller an object is, the closer a person has to move their body towards it to realize and experience it. Size forms an intimacy that instantly forges a bond, like a secret does...

 “...That's why I paint food. You bond with it. My paintings are about bonding with things.”

 Painting directly from sensitively arranged still lifes of sugary treats, celebratory confections and dapper playthings, Boucher captures color and light in luxurious, frosting-like strokes of paint. Her paintings are created on a hand-held scale to be “personal, precious, and object-like”. Although they are composed with much whimsy and humor, each painting is constructed with an attentive assertiveness which snaps her seriousness in regards to perceiving and conveying precise color relationships.

“I paint from life because the details are unlimited. A reference photograph is an abbreviated reality that seems to only give me enough freedom to move somewhat left or somewhat right-- it isn't so much an exploration as much as it feels like I'm along a plotted route... Painting (from life) however, with these small foods actually in front of me under the hot lights, so I can smell the warm dough or heating sugar, I can really feel and sense all of the possible color choices in each decision... It's like falling down the rabbit hole- you can just keep moving forward and getting deeper... I get lost, and I arrive at a painting.”

After graduating in 2013 with a BFA in painting and a BA in psychology from Rhode Island College in Providence, RI, Emily Boucher continues to explore color through her paintings. She looks to the hand of Cezanne, the spirit of Thiebaud and the sensitivity of Morandi.
