Joel Meyerowitz, an award-winning photographer whose work has appeared in more than 350 museum and gallery exhibitions around the world, was born in New York in 1938. A “street photographer” in the tradition of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Frank, Meyerowitz began photographing in 1962, shifting early in his career from black and white to color photography. His first book, Cape Light, consisted of a series of contemplative color photographs taken on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. It quickly became one of the most influential and popular photography books in the latter part of the twentieth century, breaking new ground for both color photography and for the medium’s acceptance into the art world. The book has sold more than 150,000 copies during the 30 years since its publication.
