Bio: Craig Brener grew up in Hurley, NY. Drawn to nature, but with rare opportunities to experience the solitude and beauty in his home state, Craig began to explore the Shawangunks as soon as he was strong enough to cycle there, hike, and cycle home before dark. Once able to drive, the ledges along the escarpment trail at North/South Lake State Park became a favorite spot to take in the gorgeous landscape in silent contemplation. Photography became the means to revisit the feelings experienced in a place of profound beauty. In the beginning no shots met the challenge of reproducing feelings of being there. After 20 years of improving photographic equipment and better understanding of composition and technique, Craig feels that most shots still fall short, but enough capture the magic of these extraordinary places that he can revisit those brilliant moments. He hopes that the viewer will come away with a sense of the true character of these places without having experienced them firsthand.

Craig Brener is an anesthesiologist and lives in Hurley with his wife, Alyson and their two children, Eric and Abigail. He credits his wife with ensuring that each new year brings with it travel plans to someplace new, natural, gorgeous, and undoubtedly worthy of being photographed. Seventeen years after first traveling to the Southwest of America, it remains his favorite subject matter.

Photographer’s Notes: Brilliant contrasts allowed interesting subject matter to be captured in a serendipitous moment creating this gorgeous image. An intermittently stormy day at Vermillion Cliffs National Monument made this photo possible. Days of rain in northern Arizona soaked into the sandstone that makes up these beautiful formations. Colors of wet sandstone become even more vivid. With an overcast sky above and storm clouds in the distance, this spot in the South Buttes area of Vermillion already made for a nice photo. Suddenly a stream of sunshine broke through to my left, tracking right toward this formation. When the two met, the colors exploded in the foreground, with the stormy backdrop intact, setting up this amazing contrast. Serendipity. This moment reminds me about the danger of preconceptions and assumptions - this great day of photographing and walking the buttes had seemed like a "washout" earlier at my hotel.
