Artist Bio: Kerry Pharmer was born and raised in the Hudson valley. She studied art at the Maine College of Art and at SUNY New Paltz. She currently works for a nonprofit organization that helps women and children who have escaped violent domestic situations. In addition to that, she teaches art classes and workshops for children and adults and is pursuing a master’s degree in creative arts therapy. Kerry has to make something everyday even if it is just cookies, and they are never just cookies. She says the following of her art work, “I am a storyteller. My art functions for me as a visual language; a way of saying things that cannot be said through any other means. I work intuitively, choosing found objects and materials that resonate in some way. I enjoy taking these fragments, these bits of past stories, and rearranging them to tell new stories. The stories I tell are intimate, personal narratives, about being human. The underlying theme is always the same. It is my fascination with storytelling itself. I am particularly interested in how our experiences inform the stories we tell, while the stories we tell shape our perception of our experiences. There is always a give and take, a breathing in and out. Our stories are living parts of who we are.”
