Enter the world and writings of Salem native, Nathaniel Hawthorne, in the author's childhood home. His visits to the Turner-Ingersoll Mansion inspired him to write the classic novel, The House of the Seven Gables in 1851.
Explore "Kids' Cove at the Gables". Located in a 19th century Counting House, this interactive space encourages young imaginations to discover what life was like aborad ship. Take a peek through a periscope, or use a compass to navigate your way home in this newly renovated space.
SEVEN GABLES, MANY STORIES
The house made famous by Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel still stands at the foot of Turner Street where it has for nearly 350 years. Nevertheless, its role in literature is just one of many played out by the iconic House of the Seven Gables.
In 1908, the mansion was purchased by Salem preservationist and philanthropist, Caroline Osgood Emmerton, and restored as an attraction that could help fund humanitarian activities. Ticket sales from tours of the famous house went to support the education and social service programs Ms. Emmerton had established for Salem’s poor and immigrant families.
We remain true to our founder’s vision and continue to fund what we refer to as “Settlement Programs” through museum proceeds.
We also continue to preserve the historic buildings and campus as Ms. Emmerton did. Today The House of the Seven Gables is just one of nine buildings in our National Historic Landmark District. Along with Hawthorne’s Birthplace and many other gems of 17th century architecture, furnishings and gardens, this campus continues to inspire, educate, and entertain an international audience.
