Description

This photo was taken in 1977 by Chris Stein, the co-founder and guitarist of the new wave band, Blondie, and shows Debbie Harry with a young David Bowie backstage during Iggy Pop's Idiot Tour, in which Bowie played the keyboard.  Back in 1977, Blondie had just released their debut album and the group was struggling to break big. But after David Bowie and Iggy Pop heard Blondie, they brought the band along as openers on the U.S. run of their world tour, promoting Iggy’s The Idiot, which was written in collaboration with Bowie. After news of Bowie’s death spread, Debbie Harry and Chris Stein remembered the experience as the turning point in their careers.  Blondie later covered Bowie’s beloved single “Heroes” in 1980. Chris Stein has taken thousands of images documenting the early New York City punk music scene, the visual allure of Debbie Harry and Blondie, and his collaborations with artistic luminaries including Andy Warhol and H.R. Giger. Acclaimed for both his photography and music, Chris Stein is also a producer and performer for the classic soundtrack of the hip hop film,
Wild Style, and writer of the soundtrack for the film
Union City.
