The 8th Grade Class had a special sewing day as part of their group AFTH project. Using outgrown Middle Form school uniforms, the girls each designed, cut, sewed and placed an individual leaf on the quilt’s Tree of Learning tree trunk, which was made out of their Lower Form uniforms— to represent the foundational years of their learning together. Each leaf is personalized with the student’s initials. In their 8th grade year, the Winds of Change come into their lives and gently blow them all in new and different directions. Quiltworks Collaborative, a nonprofit & award winning organization that builds community one quilt at a time, partnered with us and introduced the girls to the world of quilts. For some, it was their first time sewing with a sewing machine; others came with a little experience. With a spirit of collaboration and openness to learning a new skill, the girls created a wonderful, cozy keepsake of their years together at Convent of the Sacred Heart.
