Description

This special quilt, "Land of the Free", was made and donated by Helen Jenney of Poway and Colleen Craven of San Diego, members of the Quilts of Valor of Mira Mesa.

It is 62" x 76" and features intricate swirls, feathering, stippling and detail quilting that is simply stunning.  The back is also pieced and is signed by the quilters.

The center panel of the quilt is bordered by an intricate pieced flying geese pattern and the American Eagle is quilted to accentuate his regal feathers.

The quality of this quilt is breath-taking and would be a proud addition to anyone's home or collection.

The Quilts of Valor Foundation

Blue Star mom Catherine Roberts, began a project called the Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOVF) in 2003 from her sewing room in Seaford, Delaware. Since then QOVF has become a nationwide grassroots community service effort, connecting the home front with our wounded combat warriors, veterans of all armed conflicts, and others who were touched in some way by wars.

All across the land, Quilts of Valor are stitched together with love, prayers and healing thoughts by volunteers who spend countless hours on each one to make it very special. Those who are selected to receive a Quilt of Valor are awarded this tangible token of appreciation that sincerely and lovingly says, “Thank you for your service, sacrifice and valor in serving our nation.”

A Quilt of Valor is a generous “nap-sized” quilt, pieced and quilted by the loving and appreciative hands of hundreds of volunteers. Fabrics and patterns are carefully chosen to reflect a patriotic look and feel. After the quilt has been bound, washed, labeled and wrapped in a presentation case, it is ready to be awarded. Quilts are awarded at many different levels: they may go to military hospitals where Chaplains award them to service members; there may be presentations of many Quilts of Valor to entire service units returning from combat deployments; they may be awarded at VA facilities; or they may be presented individually.

No matter how a Quilt of Valor is given, the positive impact it delivers is unequivocal. As one recipient, an Army Staff Sergeant in Iraq whose presentation ceremony was very emotionally charged said “I received the Purple Heart because of injuries while in Iraq, but the presentation of the quilt hit me hard. I think what really moved me about the quilt was the personal touch. My quilt isn’t another military medal to be placed in a box and sit on my shelf, but something that was given to me by a woman that I may never have the pleasure of meeting, just because she cared. A lot of times veterans don’t receive the recognition we deserve. I was moved to tears.”

Just how much of an impact has the Quilts of Valor Foundation made? Over 133,000 quilts have been awarded, each richly deserved and warmly appreciated.
