Description
Taste the best from the producers that helped make California wine country famous.
This lot includes one bottle each of:
- 2012 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cask 23 Cabernet Sauvignon
- 2003 Heitz Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon
- 2012 Clos du Val Stag's Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon
All of these wineries participated in the 1976 Steven Spurrier blind tasting (now known as "the Judgment of Paris") that showed California's wines could compete with the best of France.
Stag's Leap Wine Cellars took first in the category of Cabernet Sauvignon.
These wines continue to earn critical acclaim, including 100 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate for the 2012 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cask 23 Cabernet Sauvignon. The Wine Advocate writes:
"The spectacular 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Cask 23 appears to be the finest Cask 23 since the glory years of the mid-eighties. It boasts a dense purple color, complex notes of spice box, Christmas fruitcake, blackcurrant jam, mulberries and spring flowers, as well as a full-bodied, opulent personality. It is a profound example of this iconic wine that went through a period of mediocrity in the mid- to late-1990s prior to being sold. Drink now-2038. Barrel Sample: 97-100 Points"
Alongside the wine, you'll receive a book and a DVD that describe the events leading up to the Judgment of Paris:
- Judgment of Paris: California vs. France and the Historic 1976 Paris Tasting That Revolutionized Wine, by George M. Tabor
- Bottle Shock (2008), starring Alan Rickman and Bill Pullman
Winemaker notes follow.
2012 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cask 23 Cabernet Sauvignon
The 2012 CASK 23 combines the signature perfume notes of FAY vineyard with the structure and minerality of S.L.V. The wine opens with aromas of black cherry, dark plum, espresso and spice. A rich, ripe fruit entry leads to a concentrated core of dark fruit (plum, black cherry, dried currant).
2003 Heitz Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon
A legend in Napa Valley Cabernet, Martha's Vineyard in the Valley's Oakville appellation is now certified organic by CCOF. Delivering the lively currant and mint aromas that are characteristic of this highly sought wine, the 2003 reveals layers of black cherry and bittersweet chocolate framed by firm tannins, hints of oak and bright acidity on the palate. With all elements working in harmony, this Cabernet has the potential to age beautifully for years to come.
2012 Clos du Val Stag's Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon
The Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon is our hallmark expression of the estate vineyard surrounding our winery. It is dark, elegant and rich with aromas of black fruits, mocha and spice. The palate is met with complex notes of forest fruits, dark espresso and vanilla and the mouthfeel is balanced and creamy. The tannins are classic Stags Leap District; well-structured, velvety, and perfectly integrated, making this wine approachable now but also worthy of cellaring for decades.
