This lot is a classic pairing: bittersweet dark chocolates alongside strong red wines with concentrated fruit notes.

This item includes:
- A vertical of zinfandel from Turley Wine Cellars. 2012, 2013, 2014 "Duarte" Contra Costa County Zinfandel. 89-92 points Antonio Galloni/Vinous.
- Two packages of chocolate from Sirene Artisan Chocolate Makers, each containing two bars. These were hand-picked by the Chocolate Garage to pair with Zinfandel.
About the wine
From the winemaker:
"This wine is an homage to Joe Duarte, a prominent grape grower in Contra Costa who first introduced Turley to the incredible vineyards of the area. The wine is comprised of fruit from the turn-of-the-century Evangehlo, Mori and Salvador vineyards, planted between 1890 and 1930. As a result of the sandy soils and impressive age of the vines, the wine has some of the softest, silkiest tannins we’ve ever seen in a Zinfandel."
2012: 91 points Vinous
"The 2012 Zinfandel Duarte emerges from a site in Contra Costa. The field blend includes dollops of Carignane and Mourvedre. Silky, sweet tannins provide the backbone for an attractive range of floral and spice notes. The aromatics here are particularly compelling."
2013: 89-91 points Vinous
"The 2013 Zinfandel Duarte Vineyard is bright, lifted and aromatic throughout. This is one of the more vibrant, saline wines in the range, yet there is lovely sweetness and depth to the fruit. Dollops of Carignane and Mataro round out the blend in this intriguing Contra Costa Zinfandel-based red."
2014: 90-92 points Vinous
"The 2014 Zinfandel Duarte Vineyard is pretty, floral and quite aromatic. Midweight and gracious, the 2014 is delicate and light on its feet. Sweet red and bluish hued fruits linger in a soft, nuanced Zinfandel that will drink well upon release."
About the chocolate
Sirene Artisan Chocolate Makers craft small batches of direct trade chocolate in a custom chocolate workshop in Victoria, Canada.
You will receive four bars of Sirene chocolate, two each from Ecuador and Madasgascar; two are 73% and two are 100% cocoa. Decide which you like best as a pairing.
Ecuador/Madagascar 73%
Is it the yin? Or the yang? Either way, we believe in the dialectic of chocolate. Since great chocolate always begs the question, compared to what, we present the chocolate pairing. Two chocolate varietals for a singular experience. This package contains two dark chocolate bars: one 73% bar made with cocoa beans from the Somia Plantation in Madagascar, and one 73% bar made with cocoa beans from the Camino Verde Planatation in Ecuador.
Pure Cacao Pur
Not for the faint of heart or the chocolate tourist, this is the pure bean in bar form. And nothing else. No sugar. No flavouring. Nothing to interfere with the rich flavours inherent in the beans themselves. Cross this line and you may just find yourself in chocolate nirvana. This package contains bars made with beans, and nothing else, from both Somia Plantation in Madagascar and the Camino Verde Plantation in Ecuador.
