with Rambles of a Geologist Boston: Gould and Lincoln, 1858. The publisher specialized in scientific titles. Thoreau was acquainted with other works by Miller, a geologist and pioneering paleontologist. Contemporary brown cloth, top of spine torn away (bearing the title), binding corners and edges rubbed, else tight. Two inscriptions on front fixed endpaper,one a palimpsest, the other dated April 15, 1872, both from New York area. Second owner belonged to a famous New York family. Shipping and handling extra.
